Culture
Cultural activities have been, and remain, one of the main areas of cross-border cooperation, as the 2019 Year of Culture described above also demonstrated. Artists who have enriched Carinthia’s cultural life on several occasions include the pianist Dr Josef Ölgießer, awarded UNESCO’s Gold Medal as a “Golden Name of World Culture”; the Czernowitz orchestra of Yiddish music led by Lev Feldman; the writer Josef Burg; the literary scholar and translator Univ.-Prof. Dr Petro Rychlo; the visual artists Oleg Liubkiwskyj, Orest Kryworutschko, Alexander Litvinov, Bronislav Tutelman, Igor Hilko, Anatoliy Fedirko and Sergey Akhremenko; and Viktor Pelepchuk Jr, a young pianist studying at the Gustav Mahler Private University of Music in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Audible results of this cooperation include CD projects supported from Carinthia by organist Svitlana Bardaus of the Czernowitz Regional Philharmonic Society and the Yiddish music orchestra led by Lev Feldman, as well as the recordings of Eusebius Mandyczewski’s “Chants of a Romanian Mass according to the Greek Orthodox rite”, coordinated and produced by Dr Dietmar Friesenegger.
